Our Vice President, Alan Heath, visited the Cumbria in Bloom plot at Tatton Park Flower Show 2023. He inspected the plot designed by Danny Poland and developed in conjunction with Cumbria Wildlife Trust, of which Danny is a Trustee.
The concept for Danny’s plot was to show how gardeners can introduce a small area, perhaps in an existing lawn or elsewhere in their garden, which encourages wildflowers to grow among the grass. The wildflowers will attract bees, butterflies and moths, all essential pollinators.
The plot also featured a woodpile, a small pond, a bee-to-bee hotel as well as a magnificent Cornus controversy ‘Variegata’, the Wedding Cake Tree. The tree was hung with Wishes for Wildlife written by the pupils of Irthington Primary School in Danny’s home village.
