Looking Into The Unknown A letter from Rae Beckwith

As I begin to put together the following message, I find myself sitting in the coffee shop of Harlerley Hall Nursery overlooking a small lake. The Sun is shining, and Moorhens are foraging on the lake. Beyond the lake I can see Roe Deer grazing in the thick undergrowth, it’s all a very tranquil Autumn sight. This is the last day before another period of lockdown is upon us, but I will return in 4 weeks’ time.

The last eight months have seen many changes to normal life and Bloom has been no different. However, the various groups around the UK have not been deterred and my understanding is that almost all have carried on with their various projects in some way. Some volunteers working alone, some working in a shift system and some in small groups keeping to the 2metre rule. One lady, who I know very well, even got permission to carry on planting from her local politician (she is an incredibly determined lady).

Cumbria in Bloom and their officers did a splendid job of delivering a Bloom Competition through photos which was a huge success. The Competition was at times difficult to deliver but all of the obstacles were overcome, and this achievement was all down to a can-do attitude so well done everyone involved.

The RHS staff are putting together plans for a very different style of Bloom Judging for 2021. This of course has been brought about because of the present situation with Covid-19. My understanding is that there will be a virtual aspect to the process as traveling between entries may well be still restricted.

Flower Shows are also having to alter their plans for the 2021 season. All of the major shows are considering how events can take place while ensuring the safety of the visiting public and everyone involved on site. Their plans will evolve over the next few weeks, but this is proving to be most difficult as the restrictions placed on us all change so frequently. However, Exhibitors, Specialist Societies and Judges are all being kept informed of the offering going forward.

One Bloom Region that was able to deliver their competition was Floral Guernsey.  Although I was not able to carry out the judging because of flight restrictions I was able to contribute towards their competition plans. The decision was taken to use their Discretionary Awards as judging titles and add a new award for “best project during lockdown”. I am delighted to say that the outcome was a huge success and could be repeated if necessary.

As for the future. I think we will all reflect on the year and take the positives from it. Offering help through Mentoring is something that during my time as a RHS National Judge I have tried to carry out when requested. To be able to help and try to solve issues for groups and individuals can be most rewarding. During the past 8 months it has become even more apparent to me that there is much to be gained by offering this type of support. I am equally certain that during the past 8 difficult months friendships have become even more vital to so many people. A message, a phone call or a letter can all make such a difference and in the RHS Bloom we have a first-class platform from which we can all work.

Much experience will have been gained from our new way of living. Through Bloom and Gardening activities many treasured moments will have evolved. As we move into 2021 let us all stay positive and search for new and challenging ways to improve the standing of our various groups. Who can say when the Covid-19 issues will be a thing of the past but when it is, let us all be in a position to return to what could be a new normal. Bloom for many of us has been a way of life for many years and long may that continue. The value of Bloom and the resultant friendships should never be underestimated and 2020 under the Covid-19 restrictions proved the point beyond doubt.

So, until we are able to meet up again stay safe everyone and enjoy every moment of your Bloom related work.

Kind regards.

Rae.
