Dane Ghyll Primary and Nursery School held their grand opening of their newly restructured Wildlife Area on 20th May with the Deputy Mayor of Barrow Judith McEwan cutting the ribbon. Judith became Mayor of Barrow the following day.
Judith then sat in the new Story Tellers chair and year 6 children read stories.
The school has recently planted new trees which were kindly purchased by the school PTA. There are also new seats and benches with seating areas and bird feeding tables. There are grassed areas for the children to sit in, a pond with lots of frogs, a wormery and mud kitchen.
Next the Deputy Mayor presented Royal Horticultural Society certificates to the children. Louise Postlethwaite Head Gardener explained “all year groups have worked extremely hard in the school gardens and we have now received certificates to level 5, the Royal Horticultural Societie’s highest and final level. The school received these awards following the children’s success in completing 3 separate areas of gardening for each level. Therefore the children have completed 15 different categories in total.”
Councillor Bill McEwan also attended this event and he also had a tour of the school gardens.
Finally Judith cut the ribbon to open the newly covered polytunnel which was recovered by Kimberley Clark apprentices.
Representatives from Kimberley Clark were also in school and they and the Deputy Mayor and Councillor McEwan were all presented with a tomato plant which the children had grown from seeds.
