Cumbria’s leading gardening charity, Cumbria in Bloom is urging schools to start planning for this year’s school gardens, tubs and window boxes.
All schools in Cumbria will receive an invitation to be part of the Cumbria in Bloom 2023 competition and every entry will receive a certificate, a visit from a member of Cumbria in Bloom and chance to win one of the school awards.
Ronnie Auld, Chairman of Cumbria in Bloom said: “This event is part of Cumbria in Bloom’s Annual Awards, which attracts many young gardeners to the Schools Gardening section, and we feel it is very important as it encourages the gardeners of tomorrow.
“Last year our judges were amazed at the creativity and high standard of gardens in the schools’ category.
“Every school entry is awarded a level of achievement certificate following judging, which is about encouraging and helping the pupils and schools create beautiful gardens they and their communities can be proud of.
“Schools are very much part of the communities they serve and can inspire others to get involved in community gardens.”
Last year’s winners included Dane Ghyll Primary and Nursery in Barrow who were awarded the Sheila Hensman Trophy for School Outstanding Achievement, and Schools’ vouchers for Special Achievement also went to Captain Shaw’s Primary, Bootle and Heron Hill Primary, Kendal. Heron Hill Primary in Kendal won the Rex Marsden Shield for Enriching the Curriculum, and Stoneraise Primary, Carlisle won the Biodiversity Schools Trophy. Hawkshead Esthwaite Primary won the Woodland Copse category. Last year there was a special Queen’s Platinum Jubilee award which was won by Victoria Junior School, Harrington and Vickerstown Primary School, Walney Island.
The pupils and teachers were invited to one of three award ceremonies to receive their trophies, and certificates.
Ronnie added: “Support provided to schools as part of Cumbria in Bloom is made possible by our sponsors. Businesses sponsoring Cumbria in Bloom are making a vital difference to communities across Cumbria.
“We are grateful to Windermere Lake Cruises, Cumberland Building Society, Lake District National Park, English Lakes Hotels, Ullswater Steamers, Rickerby Ltd, Hayes Garden World, Amberol, Cumbria Tourism, Serious Waste Management and United Utilities for their continued support.”
“We welcome any other businesses to become sponsors of Cumbria in Bloom.”
