Britain in Bloom competition introduces new sustainability criteria

The following is a recent communication from Amberol one of Cumbria in Bloom’s valued sponsors

Britain in Bloom competition introduces new sustainability criteria Many of you will be anticipating this year’s Britain in Bloom competition with some excitement. After a two-year hiatus of cancellation and online entries, the resumption of the competition in its traditional face-to-face format is a welcome taste of normality. However, the competition continues to evolve and move with the times, which means that there are some important changes to the judging criteria that In Bloomers need to be aware of when planning their entries.    The changes reflect the commitment of the RHS and Britain in Bloom to protecting the environment and the focus on ‘Planet Friendly Gardening’. The new criteria cover a range of areas from supporting wildlife to conserving water. As manufacturers of self-watering planters, water conservation is something we take very seriously and so we are delighted to see it given more prominence.
What are the new criteria? The criteria include careful consideration around the choice of plants such as the use of pollinator-friendly plants and those that are more pest resistant to help avoid the use of chemical control. Entrants are urged to consider wildlife in terms of creating habitats and avoiding actions which could damage food chains. There is also an emphasis on finding alternative ways to water plants to reduce the reliance on mains water supplies. In addition, entries will be expected to demonstrate that consideration has been given to improving problem areas in the local environment, such as planting hedges along roads to capture pollution particles.      Britain in Bloom has always focused on enhancing our world, but these new criteria will help steer and support groups in their work to improve their environment. And of course, if you need any advice on conserving water with our self-watering planters, we will be happy to help. You can find out more about the changes to the judging criteria here.
