Very Successful Judge’s Training Held in Keswick

About 20 current and future Cumbria in Bloom judges gathered in Keswick on Thursday 28th April 2022. Keswick offered a wide range of interesting and diverse areas for the judges to look at. On the day they were joined by RHS national judge Rae Beckwith who was on hand to give invaluable advice. In conjunction with Jean Airey, Liz Auld had devised a route for the judges to walk around, having gathered at the Rawnsley Centre. The following areas were visited:

Tithebarn Street Corner
Derwent Close
Hope Park

In 1925, Sir Percy Hope decided to dedicate the land which now forms Hope Park to the local community, opening it initially as a golf course in 1927. It was the wish of Sir Percy that the inhabitants of Keswick and visitors to the town could continue to enjoy the park ‘as a pleasure ground and garden for recreation and enjoyment and so after his death in 1974 Keswick Town Council was conveyed the park ‘on trust’ for the people of Keswick and the Hope Park Trust was established.

Today, visitors can enjoy the park’s magnificent floral displays, putting, pitch and putt, boules and obstacle golf, visit the bird viewing area or have a drink or snack in wonderful surroundings at Café Hope.

The judges were greatly assisted in their deliberations by Christine Fawcett, Keswick Parks Manager, and Catherine Parker from Keswick Town Council, both of whom met us in Hope Park and led us around the remainder of the tour.
